Homework Assignment (Wikipedia)

Due Sunday, May 26 (12:00 noon) (Sunday night or Monday is OK)

—Worth 5 points towards your Homework Grade

—Create a Wikipedia Page (person, event, place, etc) and email me your document.

—Research and make sure there isn’t a Wikipedia page already for your subject (or at least nothing substantial).

—Try to follow the basic Wikipedia format and rules.

Week 10 Homework

Due on Tuesday, May 7 at 12:00 (noon).

—Next week we will be discussing Flickr and other photo-sharing sites.

—You have a choice of two assignments:

Analyze a photo sharing site. Be specific about what the site offers to the user and how users tend to use this social media site. Also discuss what makes photo sharing sites popular (compared to Facebook, Twitter, etc).

—Use a feature on a photo sharing site to create something with your photos. Then send me the link or file. Be prepared to show and discuss in class.

Homework Week 9

Due on Tuesday, April 30 at 12:00 pm

—Follow one celebrity on Twitter and read through a number of their tweets (at least 30-40).

—Follow one politician on Twitter and read through a number of their tweets (at least 30-40).

—Compare and contrast how the celebrity and politician use the Twitter platform.

Week 6 Homework

Research a social network site (SNS) that is an alternative to Facebook (excluding Twitter).

—Describe how this site works and how it is different from Facebook.

—Do you prefer this site to Facebook? Why or why not?

—Web-based services that allow individuals to

—(1) construct a public or semi-public profile within the site

—(2) build a list of other users with whom they share a connection

—(3) view their list of connections and those made by others within the system.

—The nature and naming of these connections may vary from site to site.

Week 5 Homework

Compare Part One and Part Two of the documentary How Facebook Changed the World

—Do you believe more in the optimistic vision of Part One or the more negative view of Part Two? Give reasons for your answers.

Watch the film Catfish (2010). Answer one (or both) of the following questions:

—How does the film portray Facebook and social media? Is this film positive or negative about Facebook and its impact on human relations?

—How “real” is the central relationship in the film? How “real” is the film’s story?

—What is the attitude of the film towards social media? Is it a positive or negative portrayal? Why? Try to give specific examples and evidence from the film.

—Describe Facebook as a social media site. How does it work? What is the experience like?

—If you have a Facebook account, you can describe your personal history with the site as well.

—If you don’t have an account, create one and detail the experience.

—What does the title “babel” refer to? How does this connect to the film’s themes?

—How does the film talk about the theme of communication? Is it similar or different to how the idea of connection is discussed in social media?
